What a scary sight! I must know what the heap-of-balls were and what made them go up in smoke. Hoping the driver is fine.
Every time I head to northern CA now, I'm on the highway in an 'atmospheric river storm' and/or 'cyclone.' Oh, the sites I've seen. Trucks blown to the side of the road. Trees flying. All while I safely pass. Someone's watching out for me!
I once was traveling with my mom as a child (maybe about 10 years old or so) and we got stuck on a narrow 2-lane highway behind a nasty car crash. We were stopped for a long time. Once the first responders allowed traffic to move again, we slowly drove past a couple of body bags. The car was very silent for the rest of the trip. It was truly chilling.
thanks for sharing that Arnaud. Sounds like that made an imprint on young you. It’s such a bizarre thing too to be stuck on a highway for a long time because you normally only experience it at high speeds. At a stand still, I continue to imagine all the cars that usually would be whooshing by in this very spot that I’m stuck in. The alternate universe is a trippy place, and only a hyper-imaginative mind away…
It's funny because I never really forgot the story, but until I read your account and was reminded of it, that was the first time I recalled it in a really, really long time. I like to think that it influenced my approach to driving/riding: whatever you do, do it as safely as possible and mitigate risks, even if I'm being a bit of a daredevil at times. Not risk-averse, but risk-conscious, one could say, but always safety third (https://mikerowe.com/2020/03/walk-me-through-this-safety-third-thing/).
Great read! I googled and read it was a truck load of avocados!

OMG!!! That's an insane pile of black!
I know! And still no clue what it is...
That was one crazy truck fire! Hope the driver escaped unscathed.
I hope so too! That was my first thought when I realized it was a vehicle on the highway that was burning.

Interesting!! Thanks for this explanation, it’s the first time I’ve heard of it but it makes total sense.
