I am also highly sensitive to noise and having tinnitus exacerbates the problem. It's stressful having to deal with unnecessary noise whether indoors or outside. I have given up going to the movies (since Pre-Covid days) because the noise level was unbearable for me despite wearing earplugs. If I walk beside busy streets, I stuff my ears with some tissue (Bounty paper is better) to deaden the noise. I just googled and there it is an offence under the Hwy Traffic Act to operate a vehicle with excessive noise due to a modified exhaust. The fine goes up if there is no catalyst converter. It would be awesome if the photo radar technology used in France to catch the perpetrators could be implemented here.
For those of us who have a keen sense of hearing we just have to adapt to the situation. Learning to hear subtle sounds can make a big difference between taking action or ignoring it, like a dripping tap, crackling of a live wire, rumbling of rocks under the ground or an unusual thud on the floor.
France! In SF, I escape across the bay to ease the never ending list of self-care things I have to do as a result of being around people and their noises all the time. But! I'm close to the ocean, which is a really nice reminder that there's wide open physical space I can expand into.

Whhaaaat I thought I was the only HSP around 😂
🙋 I don't think it's a coincidence we're all hanging out
